Indonesia Small Group Tour Itinerary
-
Selamat Datang and welcome to Indonesia!
Upon arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, clear immigration and customs before meeting your local guide for the transfer to your hotel in Jimbaran. As you leave the airport behind, you'll catch your first glimpse of Indonesia, where colourful temples, lush tropical landscapes and a vibrant culture set the tone for the journey ahead.
Spread across more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago and one of South East Asia's most diverse destinations. While Bali is renowned for its beautiful beaches and rich Hindu traditions, this journey ventures far beyond the familiar, exploring the volcanic landscapes, traditional villages and extraordinary wildlife of Flores and Komodo National Park.
We've deliberately included an overnight stay in Bali to provide a relaxed start to the tour. With guests arriving from different cities and on different international flights, this allows everyone time to settle in, recover from their journey and meet the group before flying east to Flores tomorrow, where the real adventure begins.
The remainder of the day is yours to relax and enjoy the resort at your own pace. Unwind by the pool, stroll along nearby Jimbaran Beach or simply rest after your journey before the exciting days ahead.
🛏️ Movenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali, Classic Pool ViewLocated just moments from the golden sands of Jimbaran Beach, Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali offers a comfortable introduction to Indonesia. Your Classic Pool View Room overlooks the resort's tropical gardens and lagoon-style pools, while excellent dining options, a day spa and spacious facilities provide the perfect place to unwind before your journey continues to the island of Flores tomorrow.
-
After breakfast, transfer to Denpasar Airport for your included domestic flights to Ende via Labuan Bajo. Your first flight departs Bali at 7:55am, arriving in Labuan Bajo at 9:10am. During your layover, visit a traditional Flores village to experience local life and admire the distinctive architecture of its traditional homes before continuing on your flight to Ende. Departing Labuan Bajo at 12:55pm, you'll arrive in Ende at 1:50pm. All domestic flights throughout the tour include 20kg checked luggage and 7kg carry on luggage per person.
Today's journey marks the beginning of your exploration of Flores, one of Indonesia's most captivating yet least visited islands. Known for its volcanic peaks, traditional villages and deeply rooted cultural heritage, Flores offers a fascinating contrast to neighbouring Bali. Over the coming week, you'll travel from east to west across the island, discovering remote communities, spectacular landscapes and authentic local experiences before reaching the shores of Komodo National Park.
Upon arrival in Ende, meet your local guide and travel approximately 50km through the lush highlands to the peaceful village of Moni, a journey of around 1.5 hours. Situated beneath the slopes of Kelimutu National Park, Moni is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding region and you'll spend the next two nights here.
The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. Take time to settle into your surroundings and enjoy the peaceful mountain setting before tomorrow's early morning visit to the spectacular three coloured crater lakes of Kelimutu.
🥘 Breakfast
🛏️ Kelimutu Eco Lodge, Standard Double RoomNestled amongst tropical gardens on the edge of Kelimutu National Park, Kelimutu Eco Lodge provides a peaceful retreat surrounded by forests and mountain scenery. Your two-night stay allows plenty of time to experience this beautiful corner of Flores, while the lodge's close proximity to Kelimutu makes it the ideal base for tomorrow morning's unforgettable sunrise excursion to the famous three coloured crater lakes.
-
Rise before dawn this morning for one of the highlights of your journey through Indonesia. Departing the lodge at around 4:00am, travel to Kelimutu National Park before making the walk to the summit in time for sunrise. The excursion takes approximately 3 hours in total, with most groups returning by around 7:00am. As the first light of day reaches the volcanic landscape, watch Kelimutu's famous three coloured crater lakes gradually reveal their remarkable hues, creating one of Indonesia's most unforgettable natural spectacles.
Towering 1,639 metres above sea level, Kelimutu is one of Indonesia's most extraordinary volcanoes. The three crater lakes are renowned for their ever changing colours, a phenomenon caused by volcanic gases and minerals beneath the surface. For the local Lio people, the lakes are also deeply sacred, with each believed to be the resting place of different souls according to local tradition.
Returning to the lodge, enjoy a well deserved breakfast before taking some time to relax and appreciate the peaceful surroundings of the Flores highlands. This afternoon, set out on a leisurely 1.5 hour walk to a nearby waterfall before continuing to the village of Wolopaku, where you'll discover how locally grown coffee is cultivated, processed and roasted. Learn about one of Flores' most important agricultural traditions before sampling a freshly brewed cup and returning to Moni for the evening.
🥘 Breakfast
🛏️ Kelimutu Eco Lodge, Standard Double RoomLocated just minutes from Kelimutu National Park, Kelimutu Eco Lodge offers a comfortable base surrounded by tropical gardens and mountain scenery. Its enviable location allows easy access to one of Indonesia's most iconic natural attractions, while the relaxed atmosphere and warm local hospitality provide the perfect setting to unwind after another rewarding day exploring Flores.
-
After breakfast, continue west through the heart of Flores to the highland town of Bajawa. Today's drive takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, passing volcanic mountains, fertile valleys and traditional villages that offer a glimpse into everyday life on one of Indonesia's most fascinating islands. Along the way, stop at the remarkable Panggajawa Beach, also known as Blue Stone Beach, where the shoreline is blanketed with thousands of naturally polished blue, green and turquoise pebbles formed by ancient volcanic activity.
Bajawa sits in the heart of Ngada Regency, one of Flores' most culturally rich regions. Home to the Ngada people, the area is renowned for its traditional villages, megalithic monuments and distinctive architecture, with customs and ceremonies that have been passed down for generations. Surrounded by volcanic peaks and fertile farmland, Bajawa also enjoys a cooler climate than much of Flores, making it an ideal base for exploring the region.
If time permits, stop at the Soa Hot Springs, where naturally heated mineral waters flow into a series of pools surrounded by tropical forest. Enjoy the chance to soak in the warm waters before continuing to Bajawa, where you'll settle into your accommodation ahead of tomorrow's exploration of the traditional Ngada villages.
🥘 Breakfast
🛏️ Sanian Hotel Bajawa, Standard RoomSituated in the centre of Bajawa, Sanian Hotel offers convenient access to the region's traditional Ngada villages, local markets and surrounding volcanic landscapes. Simple yet comfortable, the hotel provides a welcoming place to unwind after today's drive, with an on-site restaurant serving Indonesian favourites and views across the cool highlands that make Bajawa such a pleasant place to stay.
-
After breakfast, depart Bajawa for the traditional Ngada villages of Luba and Bena, with the journey to Bena taking approximately 30 minutes. Nestled amongst the volcanic highlands of central Flores, these villages are among the most culturally significant in the region and offer a fascinating insight into the traditions and daily life of the Ngada people.
Spend approximately 2 to 2.5 hours exploring the villages at a relaxed pace. Although the walk between Luba and Bena is only around 200 to 300 metres, there is plenty of time to wander through the ceremonial courtyards, admire the distinctive thatched houses and ancient megalithic stone monuments, and discover the symbolism behind the unique village layout.
For generations, the Ngada people have maintained a strong connection to their ancestral customs, with many traditions continuing to shape everyday life. As you explore, learn about the spiritual beliefs, social structure and architectural heritage that have made these villages some of Flores' most treasured cultural landmarks.
Life in both villages revolves around a central stone courtyard, where rows of traditional houses face one another beneath steep thatched roofs. Intricately carved timber, ancestral shrines and towering megalithic stone monuments create a striking landscape that has changed little over the centuries. Chickens roam freely, coffee beans are often left to dry in the sun and daily life unfolds much as it has for generations, offering a rare glimpse into one of Flores' most enduring living cultures.
Returning to Bajawa, the remainder of the day is free to enjoy the cool mountain atmosphere of this charming highland town before tomorrow's journey west across Flores.
🥘 Breakfast
🛏️ Sanian Hotel Bajawa, ROHLocated in the centre of Bajawa, Sanian Hotel provides a comfortable base for exploring the cultural heart of Ngada Regency. Its convenient location offers easy access to the region's traditional villages, while the surrounding mountain scenery and cooler climate make it an ideal place to relax after a day of cultural discovery.
-
After breakfast, depart Bajawa and continue west towards Ruteng, a scenic journey of approximately 5 to 6 hours through the mountainous heart of Flores. Travelling along winding roads, pass volcanic peaks, fertile valleys, terraced farmland and traditional villages, offering an ever-changing glimpse into the island's diverse landscapes and rural way of life.
Along the way, stop in the village of Aimere, renowned throughout Flores for its traditional production of arak, a locally distilled palm spirit. Watch the age-old distilling process, where fermented palm sap is heated over wood fires before being carefully collected, and learn about the important role arak continues to play in local celebrations, ceremonies and everyday life.
As the journey continues, enjoy sweeping views across rolling hills, rice terraces and small farming communities that remain largely untouched by mass tourism. This scenic drive highlights the quieter side of Flores, where agriculture continues to shape daily life and dramatic mountain scenery accompanies much of the route.
By late afternoon, arrive in the cool highland town of Ruteng. Serving as the cultural heart of Manggarai Regency, Ruteng is known for its pleasant mountain climate, fertile countryside and relaxed pace of life, making it a welcome place to unwind before continuing west tomorrow.
🥘 Breakfast
🛏️ Spring Hill Hotel Ruteng, Deluxe RoomPerched on a hillside overlooking Ruteng, Spring Hill Hotel offers spacious rooms with views across the surrounding mountains and valleys. The property's peaceful setting, landscaped gardens and cooler highland climate create a relaxing atmosphere, while its restaurant showcases fresh local ingredients sourced from the fertile farms that surround the town.
-
After breakfast, enjoy a short morning walk through Ruteng, where the traditional market and quiet streets offer a glimpse into everyday life in the Manggarai Highlands. Surrounded by fertile farmland and a cool mountain climate, Ruteng remains one of Flores' most authentic regional centres, where generations of local families continue to rely on agriculture as the backbone of daily life.
Leaving Ruteng behind, continue to Cancar to visit the remarkable Lingko Rice Fields. Viewed from a nearby lookout, these distinctive spider web-shaped rice terraces are unique to the Manggarai people, with each wedge-shaped section traditionally allocated to a different family under a communal land ownership system. The striking geometric patterns create one of the most recognisable landscapes in Flores and reflect an agricultural tradition that has endured for centuries.
Continue west towards Labuan Bajo, with the journey taking approximately 5 to 6 hours. As the road descends from the highlands, the scenery gradually transforms into rolling coastal hills before the turquoise waters of the Flores Sea come into view. Arriving on the island's western tip, Labuan Bajo has evolved from a small fishing village into one of Indonesia's premier tourism destinations, while still retaining its relaxed seaside atmosphere and working harbour.
The gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Komodo National Park, Labuan Bajo is the starting point for exploring the region's extraordinary islands, rich marine life and the world's largest lizard, the Komodo dragon. Settle into your resort and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure before tomorrow's adventure.
🥘 Breakfast
🛏️ Sudamala Resort Komodo, Inerie Garden RoomThis evening, stay at the award-winning 5-star Sudamala Resort Komodo. Located on the shores of Labuan Bajo, the resort offers elegant accommodation inspired by traditional Indonesian design, complemented by a private beach, infinity pool and oceanfront restaurant overlooking the Flores Sea.

After breakfast, transfer approximately 15 minutes to Labuan Bajo Harbour, where you will board your traditional Indonesian phinisi for a memorable 3-day, 2-night cruise through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Komodo National Park. Boarding typically takes place between 8:00am and 10:00am, depending on harbour operations and your vessel's departure schedule.
As with all cruises through Komodo National Park, the exact itinerary is subject to weather, sea conditions and tidal movements to ensure the safest and most enjoyable experience. While your captain may adjust the order of visits or substitute locations if required, today's planned itinerary includes Pulau Kelor, Manjarite and Kalong Island, offering a wonderful introduction to the park's extraordinary landscapes and marine life.
Your first stop is Pulau Kelor, a small uninhabited island surrounded by crystal-clear waters. A short five-minute walk to the summit rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views across the surrounding islands, while below, the white sand beach provides an opportunity to relax, swim or simply soak up the spectacular scenery before continuing your journey.
From here, cruise to nearby Manjarite, one of Komodo National Park's most accessible snorkelling locations. Sheltered from strong currents, its calm turquoise waters are home to colourful coral gardens, tropical reef fish and a remarkable diversity of marine life. Whether snorkelling amongst the vibrant underwater world or enjoying the scenery from the boat, Manjarite offers a memorable introduction to the park's internationally renowned marine environment.
Later this afternoon, continue cruising through the archipelago towards Kalong Island. As the sun begins to set, anchor beside the island's mangrove forests to witness one of Komodo National Park's most captivating natural spectacles. Thousands of flying foxes emerge from the trees at dusk, filling the sky as they leave in search of food across the surrounding islands. Enjoy dinner onboard before spending your first night anchored beneath a canopy of stars in the heart of the national park.

The planned itinerary includes Padar Island, Komodo Island, Pink Beach, Taka Makassar and, conditions permitting, Manta Point.
Your first stop is the iconic Padar Island, renowned for its dramatic landscapes and breathtaking viewpoint overlooking three crescent-shaped bays with beaches of contrasting colours. For those who wish, there is the opportunity to climb the staircase to the summit, where panoramic views across the surrounding islands reward the effort. The hike is optional and subject to weather conditions and the preferences of the group.
Continue to Komodo Island, the largest island within the national park and home to the world's largest lizard, the Komodo dragon. Accompanied by an experienced park ranger, enjoy a guided walk through the island's dry forest and savannah in search of these remarkable reptiles while learning about their behaviour, ecology and conservation. Along the way, keep an eye out for other wildlife including Timor deer, wild boar and water buffalo that also inhabit the island.
This afternoon, enjoy time at the famous Pink Beach, where the soft blush-coloured sand is created by fragments of red coral mixing with white sand, making it one of only a handful of naturally pink beaches in the world. Swim, relax on the beach or snorkel amongst vibrant coral reefs before continuing to the tiny sand cay of Taka Makassar. Conditions permitting, there may also be an opportunity to visit nearby Manta Point, where lucky snorkellers may encounter graceful reef manta rays gliding through the nutrient-rich waters. As evening falls, cruise to your overnight anchorage near Pink Beach and enjoy another peaceful night surrounded by the spectacular scenery of Komodo National Park.

Enjoy a final morning aboard your phinisi as you continue cruising through the spectacular waters of Komodo National Park. As with previous days, today's itinerary is subject to weather, sea conditions and tidal movements, with your captain adjusting the schedule where required.
